FAQ

Any questions running around your mind?

How much time do I need to volunteer?2021-05-26T14:10:07+00:00

Every project is unique and every community has a different need, but we will build the project also taking into consideration your availability and needs. In some cases, there will be a minimum number of months required for your commitment, in order to realize the project and reach the goals. We can divide our project into different categories:

  • Volunteer experiences (such as summer camps, group immersive programs, service-learning experiences). 2 weeks – 1 month long.
  • Short term volunteer projects – 1 – 3 months long
  • Long term volunteer projects – 3 months – 1+ year
Do I need to have travel and medical insurance for the duration of my project?2021-05-26T10:56:06+00:00

Yes, you do. We will study case by case what are the best options and we will be here to support you in this process.

Will somebody accompany me during the project? There will be a tutor assigned to me?2021-05-26T10:55:30+00:00

We want to be sure that your project is going for the best possible, so during your project, you will be able to rely on a tutor assigned to you within your community (can be a member of your community or of the centre you are working in) in the case you will be experiencing any problem or issue.

Periodical checks, in-person visits to the project, final debriefings and evaluations may be organized by the different entities. We want to be sure that you are living a good experience and that everything is going for the better for both you and the community!

What about online volunteering?2021-05-26T10:54:41+00:00

With the COVID19 pandemic, international volunteer projects and programs have been postponed or cancelled. But through online volunteering, at this moment, you can really make a difference for some communities, supporting their activities. If you are interested in engaging in the mission in this way, or if your school, community or entity is in searching for online support, please send an email to info@lasallevolunteers.global.

What kind of documents will I need to provide after submitting the application form?2021-05-26T10:53:59+00:00

The application form is the first step of a journey. We want to be sure that you are going to live a healthy, happy and safe experience, so other documents will be needed. They may be different based on your country of origin and destination and on the project you are applying for. Usually, you will be required to:

  • Have a passport valid for six months beyond your intended return date
  • Provide a health assessment or certificate of a doctor
  • Provide a letter of referee
  • Provide your Background Check (also called Judicial Records Register, Police Check or Police Clearance Certificate)
  • Sign the Child Protection Policy of your hosting community or entity
Do I need to have special qualifications, degrees or previous experiences to volunteer for a Lasallian Project?2021-05-26T10:53:34+00:00

No, you don’t. We believe that any person, of any age, can have gifts and talents that can be donated to the mission. We will do our best to help you find the right project for you.

What are the steps I need to take from the application to the start of my project?2021-05-26T14:04:05+00:00

La Salle Volunteer Global is a network of entities, so after filling the application form, there may be different steps to be taken. In any case, after submitting the application form we will need a bit of time to reflect on it and share it with the receiving community. What is important to know is that you will start your journey way before being in your destination country, going through moments of reflection, preparation and formation sessions.

Can I volunteer together with my family, friends or with a group?2021-05-26T14:04:27+00:00

Yes, you can. Every +18 y.o. in the project will be required to fill an application form. When your group will be ready for submitting the applications, please choose one group representative. He will be the main contact person for any communication and for move forward in the process. In the case of school groups, you will be required to proceed in a different way and we invite you to read the following FAQ.

I’m a student, a teacher or a principal and I would like to know more about possible short experiences for a school group. What can I do?2021-05-26T14:04:52+00:00

Please contact us at info@lasallevolunteers.global and we will start to explore possibilities together!

Where will I live during my project?2021-01-20T16:15:10+00:00

During your project, you will be living in a community with other people. The community can have different shapes and sizes depending on the project and it can include Lasallian Brothers or other religious men and women, other volunteers and partners.

Will I need to attend training sessions before being ready for the departure?2021-01-20T16:14:50+00:00

Yes, you will. We believe that formation and accompaniment is a key element in the process to be ready for an international volunteer experience at any level and for the realization of a good experience. Depending on your project, you may be asked to attend virtual formation sessions, on arrival orientation programs, or to be available for one to one video calls. Additional written material may be shared with you.

How old do I have to be to Volunteer?2021-01-20T16:14:01+00:00

The minimum age requirement for individual participants is 18 years old. Some programs also have a minimum age requirement of 21 years. You can visit the specific Open Call page to check the minimum age requirement for the currently open projects. However, volunteers below 18 years and children can join the program if they are volunteering with their family or as a part of a group (with adult members). There’s no specific maximum age bar to join our programs – as long as you are healthy and fit enough to volunteer, you can join the journey.

How can I apply for an open call?2021-05-26T14:02:25+00:00

If you are an individual of 18+ y.o. you just need to download the application form and send it to info@lasallevolunteers.global. We will start from there!

Do I need to be religious or belong to a specific faith to apply for a project?2021-05-27T10:56:44+00:00

No, you don’t. The Lasallian Institute is a Catholic institution founded by Saint John Baptiste De La Salle more than 300 years ago. Our values are built around the Christian faith, but our mission is to take care of kids and young people at risk, independently from their faith and provenience. The Lasallian Institute is present in 80 countries in the world and welcome students of different cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs. So, all are welcome.

As a volunteer, you will be asked to actively participate in the life of the community and it will include prayer moments. We will ask you to take part in it, sharing these moments with an open heart and mind, sharing your beliefs and personal spirituality. Volunteering is discovering, enriching and questioning yourself, in many different ways.

How can I understand what is the right project for me to apply for?2021-05-26T14:03:13+00:00

Being a volunteer will allow you to experience living in a foreign country for a few months. This is very exciting! But you should also remember that being a Lasallian volunteer means bringing your peculiar energies and talents to a community who is working for the good of the most in need. So consider that even if you will have some free time to explore the country, this is not a holiday! We think that you should look for a project where you can be useful, where you can bring competencies that are needed and where you think you can learn and challenge yourself while donating your time.
